a dream about an exorcism in the back of a u-haul, followed by a loose ink wash of a hard rain.
In which I sum up why I cultivate a relationship with my sketchbook and my dreams.
…there are ladders in your dreams with rungs taken out…you can’t go back to where you’ve been…
Though I’m currently freezing my ass off in my “house beanie”, my dreams are marching into Spring.
In fact, all winter they’ve been pulling me aggressively toward the promise of new life, and issuing oddly vivid reminders that I must move ahead with what’s essential & that some things (even some very important things) must stay behind.
I know this because I’ve written about all the dreams in my notebook— tucked in amongst drawings— where I’m also asking myself questions like:
What do I need to leave behind this winter to have my own personal Spring?
-or-
What gets pruned so I can bloom?
Once you start asking questions with your notebook/sketchbook — where you turn an idea over from all these different directions— the whole thing starts to speak back with you in surprising ways.
[Which nicely sums up why I cultivate this practice!]:
…a scribbled 3a.m. note… a dream about an exorcism in the back of a u-haul, followed by a loose ink wash of a hard rain.
a few days later, a dream about resurrection squeezed in next to yet another poem about longing.
and the next page— a sketch of a storm cloud pierced by the sudden understanding that I’m ready to move on…
But from what, exactly?
(And toward what?)
I’ll be asking my notebook for more answers as I draw and ponder across the pages, but I’ve already felt some clues tingle across the skin of my arms…
What have you been noticing lately?
Are you feeling ready to move on?
Ready to move toward something?
